Va. Beach-based SEAL killed in Afghanistan


A Navy SEAL based in Virginia Beach was killed this weekend during a firefight in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Sunday.

Petty Officer 1st Class Kevin R. Ebbert, 32, of Arcata, Calif., died Saturday of a gunshot wound in Uruzgan province, a department spokesman said. Ebbert was based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek.

No other details were available.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our teammate who has made the ultimate sacrifice," Capt. Robert Smith, commander of Naval Special Warfare Group 2, said in a statement.
